Go nuts this new year!

Saturday, December 30th, 2006

Chestnuts more commonly seen in Europe are fantastic for a light nutritive nibble. The roasted chestnuts that you have during the holidays are low on fat, rich in minerals and high on fiber. That makes these nuts help metabolism and lower cholestorol.

Hemorrhoids diet

Friday, December 29th, 2006

Piles or hemorrhoids is a painful inflammation of the veins inside or outside the rectum. All the pain, bleeding and discomfort can be the result of plain genetics, chronic constipation, too much sitting at work, obesity and even stress.

A healthy diet could alter things for your painful piles:

-Have a diet rich in fiber.Take plenty of fruits and juices especially papaya, mango, lime, jambul, cherry and figs.

-Vitamin E and zinc supplementation helps the healing process.

-Home remedy diets include having soaked dried figs, grated radish in honey, and bitter gourd juice in buttermilk. This home remedy page is a good read.

Curves for Women

Friday, December 29th, 2006

What is the Curves workout all about?

The Curves exercise is a successful gym program that stresses on a total work out program for women. So there is the usual warm up,aerobic exercise, strength training and cool down. Hydraulic resistance is the key. Emphasis is on pushing and pulling rather than lifting and lowering weights. The thirty minute work out is great for women for all ages but how long can you pull it off?

Diet pill dangers

Thursday, December 28th, 2006

We all know of the problems that diet pills can cause. The side effects range from sleeplessness and nausea to cardiovascular problems. There are other reasons why living on the diet pill could be dangerous and could cause a lot of problems:

diet-pills.jpg

-Addiction: Like any pill, diet pills can grow on you and you can get excessively dependent on this kind of medication. Besides the psychological effect, some diet pills are stimulant based. So it’s always better to opt for prescription drugs that are time bound.

-Confused metabolism: Having diet pills cuts down on your calorie intake since the principle behind it is suppressing hunger. But what happens is that by confusing your body, you slow down your metabolism too and so your weight loss slows down too after a while.

-Complacency:When you have diet pills, you think that you don’t need to exercise and eat healthy any more. But that really doesn’t help. You can’t live on pills forever. So once your doctor tells you to start a healthy diet and exercise regimen,go for it.

Does anyone care about the obesity explosion?

Wednesday, December 27th, 2006

When I read Dr Sanjay Gupta’s post on How do I get people to care about obesity? I wondered whether people think that all this talk about America and the rich countries in the world going fat is a joke. Does anyone really care?

I think it’s easy not to care as long as it’s not your problem. But if you are a compassionate sort of person you might want to know why the developed world is turning into generation X-large. Too much of the sedentary life and too much unnecessary food intake are the primary reasons. Children are also victims of this disturbing trend. A war on obesity is only as necessary as a war on smoking, drugs and excessive alcohol abuse.

It’s not about being ’size-ist’. It’s about saving yourself from unnecessary diseases like diabetes, blood pressure, prostate cancer and degenerative arthritis. Isn’t the idea of a life filled with unnecessary suffering enough to motivate people to get into shape instead of lobbying for the right of the flab?

Belly bugs

Wednesday, December 27th, 2006

There are many reasons for the pounds packing on. Bugs could be one of them.

The kind of bugs or microbes you have in your gut could make you fat. We have trillions of microorganisms in our body and these exist in a kind of symbiotic atmosphere in the body. The bugs can do us some favors and sometimes they can cause harm.

Some bugs in the gut metabolize the food we eat and this seems to contribute to obesity.Obese people seem to have more of the Firmicutes gut bacteria than the Bacteroidetes variety. No one knows yet why these gut flora cause trouble for some people.Do you inherit it from your mom or do antibiotics trigger off the trouble?

If we could target these bugs, we might be able to tackle obesity.Blame the bugs for now.

New year resolution:Commitment

Tuesday, December 26th, 2006

It’s that time of year when you become honest with yourself and assess your year. An honest assessment is crucial if we want to make changes in the coming year. As far as your diet plan went, did you stick with your goals or did you indulge on a variety of fad diets only to give up in a matter of weeks?

Maybe this 2007 you could make a simple decision.

COMMIT.

It’s like a relationship people. If you stick with your life, it works. If you consistently eat healthy and sensibly and exercise everyday, you’ll be a new person by 2008. Commit to a sensible life and the calories will burn off.

No miracle weight loss this X’mas

Monday, December 25th, 2006

The quick fix diet before X’mas usually involves cutting the carb. Research, however, proves that fad diets don’t really help all that much. You may cut down on carb but what about cutting down on fatty food and what about exercise?

“Don’t bother” scientsists say. There is no proof that cutting carbs cuts your waistline. Get your nutrition from healthy foods like fruits and veggies and cut the fats. And if you can ,stay away from Christmas goodies.

Isn’t that too much to ask?

Careful drinking

Saturday, December 23rd, 2006

Alcohol consumption is never a good idea especially if you have a history of violent verbal or physical behavior triggered off by the drink. But if you must have some drinks during the Christmas holidays keep these valuable tips in mind.

-Its better to avoid diet mixers. Drinking rum and coke is safer than drinking rum and diet coke since the sugar helps in alcohol metabolism.

-It’s best to dilute your alcohol with water.

-Like eating from smaller plates helps you eat sensibly, drinking from smaller glasses limits your intake.

-Avoid mixing liqours.

-Never drink on an empty stomach.

Eating fat makes you stupid

Friday, December 22nd, 2006

food.gifEating too much fatty food makes you stupid according to research. The most susceptible to this are children. A high intake of junk foodcan cause the brain to absorb less energy than it usually does to function adequately.

How do scientists know this? Baby rats were categorized into group A which was fed a standard laboratory rat diet with 10% extra fat included and group B had a diet rich in either vegetable or animal fat. The group A rats seemed to be slower in picking up lab tricks like pushing at a lever.

Well this means that we shouldn’t encourage kids to eat junk food and we shouldn’t lobby for junk food at schools either. Kids need to eat healthy and be as active as possible. It prepares them for a healthier, happier future.

Burn every extra Christmas goodie calorie

Friday, December 22nd, 2006

countdown1.jpgWith all the goodies you get to eat during Christmas you lose count of all those excess calories. The Christmas calorie calculator does the math for you…all you have to do is tick away at what you’ve had.

The Diet Detective’s Countdown is a great book for this season since you have a food-by-food analysis with calorie count and the exercise time needed to burn it. According to the author,Charles Stuart Platkin, the burn time for various foods we take for granted is quite huge:

-A half-pound of prime rib requires 230 minutes of yoga.
-A Starbucks Caramel Macchiato needs 38 minutes of biking.
-A Whopper from Burger King requires 173 minutes of walking.

Reading a book like that will really make you do a rethink on your eating habits. Instead of being discouraged and stashing it away, I think you should understand the dynamics of eating and read as much as you can about how those calories burn. Studies like this coud help people to eat sensibly, indulge on more fruits and vegetables and stay away from the prime offender- junk food. It also tells you about how much exercise you really need and you might want to be exercising more than usual.
