Good food,better love life

Thursday, December 21st, 2006

Although it has been recommended to have oysters, chocolate and wine for a better sex life, studies have shown that eating a healthy diet spices up your life. Eating lots of fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes, and minimal calories from fats is the best way to have a healthier heart and thereby better blood circulation. The idea would be that any food that makes you healthy, will spark up life in the bedroom.

Some funny food facts on this count are:

-Vitamins in eggs can reduce performance anxiety in bed.

-Calcium in vanilla ice cream causes strong orgasms.

-Folic acid in cereal improves blood circulation.

-Blueberries improve blood flow to genitals!

Why is Santa so happy?

Wednesday, December 20th, 2006

Santa Claus

Santa is pictured as a very jovial heavy -bellied old man. The perception of joviality and roundness often go together and research now proves that there is a connection. It has been statisically proven that fat people can be far happier than their thinner counterparts. Suicide and thinness seems to have a connection too. The thinner you are, the more likely it is that you could fall victim to depression.

One theory is that the higher your BMI(I’m not talking about morbidly obese individuals who can get extremely depressed too), the more insulin resistance you have. This raises your serotonin levels which gives you that feel-good factor. Some even believe that dieting does not give you all the happiness it claims to. The more you eat, the happier you get, they say.

But considering all the health problems that the big belly can give you, being fit might just work out in the long run. Although Santa should just stay the way he is- fat and full of joy!

polluted lungs

When you smoke, the amount of oxygen absorbed from the blood into the lungs is decreased and the amount of oxygen released into the blood is decreased. When you smoke there is more airway resistance and there could be mucous membrane swelling(over a long term), so the amount of oxygen you breathe in decreases.

Although studies have proven that exercising helps smokers, a decreased endurance among smokers causes a lot of them to quit exercise programs early on. Even passive smoking causes increase in fatigue after exercise.

Smoking and exercise

smoking.jpg

Research has proven that if you can’t quit smoking you might as well exercise. But there is no substitute for quitting smoking.

The lowest risk of lung cancer rates were found smokers who exercised at least four times a week. Nobody knows the exact correlation between physical exercise and decreased lung cancer among smokers. Exercise improves pulmonary activity and perhaps this cuts down on carcinogenic deposits in the lungs.

The best bet would be to quit smoking altogether.

Fitness video for your kids

Monday, December 18th, 2006

A fitness video for kids? That’s what The Three Squares has come up with. Since kids spend a lot of time watching television interactive exercise and mental stimulation sessions will help kids burn their calories. The video provides thirty minutes of sequential activity.

Parents can team up with their kids and warm up,do some basic cardio and cool down. The Brahm’s lullaby accompaniment makes the exercises a soother. The video is medically approved. Its true tht kids don’t need videos to stay active but if you think your preschooler is a little prone to fattening up and watching too much T.V, this just might be the right X’mas gift to give him.

Sean Riggins gets some justice

Monday, December 18th, 2006

Sean Riggins was a young footballer who lost his life to a diet pill ephedra . Federal legislation has made it mandatory that manufacturers and distributors of dietary supplements should notify the FDA about any unwarranted side effects caused by such products. Its been a long four years for the Riggins family but at least the law is finally moving in their favor.

Ephedra acts as a stimulant, increases heart rate and can cause an increase in blood pressure. Being a thermogenic, ephedra also causes increased metabolism. Originally a Chinese drug, ephedra has reported side effects ranging from headaches, insomnia, vomiting to cardiac arrest.

Sean Riggins disn’t have to die. Maybe he thought ephedra would help him stay the right weight and maybe even have a perfect toned body.Stay away from diet pills since the labels are very often misleading and thogh you may lose weight its not going to last once you stop the supplements.

Who wants to be size zero?

Monday, December 18th, 2006

anorexia2.jpg

There’s a lot of debate going on about size zero.Should teenagers be victims of the skeleton figure perceptions? Is size zero beautiful or are fashion houses just creating anorexic girls as coat hangers to promote their designs?

With many models passing out and even passing away due to abnormal eating habits, I’m beginning to wonder whether the right people are on the diet track. What’s the point of a thirteen year old(who needs her nutrition and should be eating adequately) wanting to be size zero? The largest section of dieters would probably be teenage girls who don’t need to diet in the first place.

Being anorexic means being unhealthy and depriving yourself of a good life. Unless you are size zero because of genetics, you can’t persecute yourself for being size four. If you are healthy and your BMI is just about average, exercise and healthy eating will help you stay in shape. If you are size zero your BMI will probably be below 18 and that’s not a good thing, especially if you are starving yourself for it.I’d say if you think your belly is bigger than it should be, go on a rigorous diet plan; otherwise chill.

Another reason why you shouldn’t have coke….

What do you think of it?

Why are you fat?

Saturday, December 16th, 2006

There are many reasons for being fat:

Genetics:Look around you. If you have obese parents and obese grandparents, then chances are that you will be obese too.

Mom in particular:If mom is fat, chances are that you will be too. At least that’s what researchers say.

Eating low-fat foods: Funnily low- fat foods don’t necessarily have low calories. So when indulge on low fat foods you are just putting on weight.

Working long hours: Sitting at the computer for most of the week makes you fat since you don’t get to burn those calories.

Eating flaky biscuits: The flaky crispness of biscuits comes from plastic fats like trans fats and so biscuits and cookies are heavy on calorie count.

Depression: Antidepressants are fattening too. Robbie Williams claims that tranquilizers caused him to gain the pounds.

Thyroid problems: It would be good to check your thyroid if you are unusually obese.

Eating at restaurants: If you dine out more, there are more chances that you will be heavier. Restaurant foods have much larger quantities of saturated fat and sodium.

Women in charge

Friday, December 15th, 2006

A survey has revealed that women are sill the primary householders. They still do most of the cooking and shopping. There’s a lot of talk about the new age liberated woman, the career woman, the woman of the twenty first century but when it comes to home making, women come first. This is important news when it comes to health intervention. Only a woman would know the right food choices for her husband if he’s ,for example, diabetic.

Why is it that women take it on themselves to police the household?

-Habit. Women have been rearing families for as long as forever.
-They have a superiority complex when it comes to domestic affairs and any man who passes judgements while in the kitchen will realise that his opinion is valued least there.
-Women claim that they shop faster in supermarkets.

Since women have taken it on themselves to run the home, they should be aware of the importance of health foods and exercising. Only they can steer their family in the right direction! Anyone who believes otherwise, comments are welcome.

Dieting together

Friday, December 15th, 2006

Going on a diet as a couple is a great way to keep your dieting patterns on track. Its also a great way to bond. Going to the gym together or doing yoga together is fun and since couples today hardly get to see each other, exercising together is a fun way of losing weight. Often you give up dieting because you hate to exercise alone and since you are accountable to noone , its easy to skip a gym session.

When you diet with your partner, cooking becomes easier since both of you have to eat the same foods. So there’s no question of stocking up junk food for one person and not the other. Its a good idea to encourage your kids to eat what you are eating and if its healthy food, then you are doing them a big favour.

Deciding to lose weight is a life-changing decision. Its always better if you have a support system and if you and your partner are jogging on the same track, it will be fun and you will tone up together!

This isn’t a good idea for all of you who think that the gym is the last place you would like to see your partner!:)

3 excuses you make for not eating healthy

Thursday, December 14th, 2006

Here’s why you think eating healthy is just too much a waste of time:

-You are under the impression that healthy food is expensive. Not really. The trick is to buy ONLY healthy food and not to stock up on the junk food you could get via coupons. You don’t always have to buy organic foods; try normal foods like regular fruits, greens, wholegrain bread instead. You can actually save on money if you stop buying soda pop, candy and burgers.

-You don’t have time to cook. Cooking meals everyday is such a pain, especially if you are a lousy cook. But give it time. Do some reading and collect recipes from your friend and the internet and you’ll find yourself enjoying your creative frenzy in the kitchen.

-You’ll have to stick to meals once you switch over to healthy foods. No constant munching and guzzling down coke. It’s kind of a scary feeling for people who eat food like they breathe to stick to salads and cereal. But it’s worth it. What’s the use of eating so much and feeling unhealthy?

Diet dangers

Thursday, December 14th, 2006

Jody Gorran’s claims that the Atkins diet put his life in danger were quashed by U.S.District Judge Denny Chin. The Atkins diet is a low-carb diet and stresses on high protein.

Problems with this diet module include:

-The short term weight loss factor. In medical terms this is called ketosis. When your body loses out on carbs, metabolism turns to ketones from fat and protein for energy. So you lose water weight, fat and muscle mass.
-The Atkins diet is boring and it’s hard to stay away from carbs since they figure in everything from bread to pastas.
-Contrary to belief some doctors think that a rise in fatty food consumption could cause cholesterol to rise.
-The Atkins diet is low on fruits, greens and wholegrain.

But does the diet kill you? I don’t know….some say Gorran pulled off a publicity stunt and others say he was a victim of misinformation.Either way, the best bet is to eat healthy. Have a balanced protein-carb-fat diet.

Don’t worry,be happy:)

Wednesday, December 13th, 2006

Laughter is really the best medicine around. Research has proven that laughter can destress you and boost your immune system. You don’t need a doctor to tell you how you feel after you laugh in the company of your friends. Medical studies have shown that laughter stimulates your organs, helps you to increase your intake of oxygen and causes release of higher amount of endorphins. In the long term laughing makes you a more positive person and less susceptible to illness. Laughter is the foundation of health in our stressed out world but I guess laughing AT others is not the solution. You have to laugh at yourself.

It really helps if you want to lose weight or gain weight too. If you have a positive vibe about you exercise and diet programs will start translating into more toned bodies. If you can’t smile silly, you could hang out with jovial people or you could join a laughter yoga class :)

When Kataria of the laughing yoga school started out his Hasya(laughter) yoga he followed the regular pranayama breathing and then rhythmically ‘ho hoed’ and ‘ha haed’ until the class erupted into a riot of laughter. His ‘laughter cocktail’ assimilates all kinds of laughing from hearty and loud, the silent sort to the arm-swinging uncontrolled guffaw. Although this laughter is forced, it helps you combat stress and makes you more accepting of your own faults and those of others.
