The secret of the sumo wrestler’s diet

Tuesday, January 16th, 2007

Sumo wrestling takes you by surprise since being obese is the standard criterion for taking it up as a profession. Aspiring sumo wrestlers have to start as teenagers and usually have stocky bodies. Obese teenagers are not selected since they usually lack the discipline required to stay in the wrestling game.

Sumo wrestlers or rikishi as they are known exercise a great deal. They warm up and perform various body strengthening exercises. All this on an empty stomach. This lowers their metabolic rate and increases their appetite. By noon, the starving rikishi settle down in groups for their all important meal: the chanko-nabe. This meaty stew is an assortment of fish, pork, beef or chicken and is eaten with rice and vegetables. The steroid effect comes in because of the sheer enormous portions that the sumo wrestlers have to eat. After all that food, the rikishi has a long nap. Sumo wrestlers drink heavily since that helps them get the enormous beer belly: the balancing element in their bodies.

Beware of steroids

Monday, January 15th, 2007

Be wary of performance-enhancing drugs like steroids and growth hormones. Used by athletes, these drugs are now mushrooming on the home front with kids and aspiring body builders using them. These drugs provide strength to your muscles and increase endurance, besides the other effects on various parts of the body.

muscle.jpg

The idea behind using steroids is to increase muscle mass but there are side effects since we already have a natural reserve of hormones in our body.Increased quantity of steroids like Testosterone can cause decrease in sperm count, create enlarged breast tissue, increase the size of your prostate gland, cause water retention coupled with aches and pains, and cause havoc with your cholesterol levels. Steroids can also make you more aggressive than is required.Growth hormones have a string of side effects from affecting your metabolism to causing muscular disease and now doctors are linking these hormones to cancer.

You simply cannot administer these drugs on yourself without medical advice since you don’t know how you can ease away potential problems by countering it with other drugs.Although the drugs provide an illusion of strength, you would be better off without them.

This article provides you a lot of valuable information.

Back to the Stone Age

Friday, January 12th, 2007

The stone age diet is all about the way our ancestors ate food before the discovery of fire and cooking. It is believed that stone age man did not suffer from diseases like hypertension, diabetes and obesity. Life in the stone age was far from perfect. It was a life of constant risk and perhaps the most important period of man’s mental development. He survived against all odds and developed motor skills that have since turned the resourceful human into a dependent creature. Today the developed world depends tremendously on technology.

Although man was safe from certain ailments, his risks of dying from bacterial infections and wounds were far greater. No one wants go back to the stone age but there has been a lot of research in the field of paleolithic dietary norms. It was a diet high on fiber and low on unnecessary carbohydrates. Consumption of dairy products were also limited.

Due to the absence of cooking, grains, beans and root vegetables like potatoes were practically non-existent in the human diet. Research shows that grains when uncooked are highly toxic and since the purpose of grain is to really provide fruit, grains and beans contain natural poisons that make them unattractive as food.

So the absence of grains in the stone age diet makes sense as grains could not be cooked and were toxic.Today a diet high in refined grain causes sugar in the blood stream to spiral and thereby increases insulin production. The kind of meat that people eat is different too.Domesticated animals are fed on processed grain and even meat. And to make things worse modern man doesn’t exercise as much as he should.

Diet pills for dogs?

Thursday, January 11th, 2007

Now man’s best friend is getting fat too. If your dog weighs 20% more than its ideal weight, then welcome your pup to the obesity epidemic! Dogs eat fattier foods than humans. Obese canines now have a government-approved drug called Slentrol. This liquid drugs helps to cut down puppy fat and NO, it’s not for humans or cats either! The diet pill should be accompanied by a healthy diet plan and exercise.

fat_dog.jpg

But is this going a bit too far? Can you cope with dog distress symptoms. Diet pills have side effects and you don’t want a vomiting, lethargic, sickly dog,do you? Some critics believe that it’s time pet owners get responsible.

Instead of resorting to pills, owners should take their dogs for regular check-ups and ask the vet what has to be done. You’ll have to lower the dog food calories and take your dogs out for longer walks. Obesity can cause dogs to lose breath easily and make them intolerant to heat and exercise. So take practical steps to help your pets.

Smart cooking

Wednesday, January 10th, 2007

Cooking light is an art. You can use your cookbook recipes to your advantage. Mix and match ingredients of your choice. Why don’t you try using more veggies when you cook? That way your food will retain its volume. Substitute red meat with leaner meat. Use less salt. Use skimmed milk for soups. Think food, think science.

healthy-eating.jpg

For toppings use a strong tasting cheese. That way you can settle for a sprinkling of cheese. Sprinkle nuts and chocolates instead of fat-rich batter. Use egg substitutes and cut down on sugar. You can think bread crumbs instead of pankos. Always fry in a non -stick pan and use cooking spray. If you have to use oil, use the lightest variety in the market.

Start getting into shape

Monday, January 8th, 2007

The American Heart Association has started a new initiative called Start! urging all sedentary office goers to start walking and improve their health. As we all know walking has many benefits. Walking is the beginning; it’s not entirely sufficient but if you really don’t have any time for anything else it’s a great way to start.

Get started now!

The idea is to turn corporations into ‘fit friendly’ places where work is not just about slogging away at the expense of your health. Your work place shouldn’t be the place that kills you. Hope the initiative works.

Skiing for fitness

Monday, January 8th, 2007

If you walk for an hour you tend to burn maybe 150 calories, but with an hour of skiing you can lose as much as 500 calories. Check out the latest North Beach diet this season!

But before you ski you have to be reasonably ski fit. A daily aerobics routine coupled with some strength training for strengthening the quads and hamstrings will make you ready for the ski slopes. A lot of skiing injuries result from lack of fitness in the first place.

Scared to read?

Friday, January 5th, 2007

What kind of effect does reading diet literature have on you?

Where teenage girls are concerned, too much of diet story influence could lead to eating disorders later on. Teenage girls who want hot and slim bodies are being culturally conditioned that only a certain kind of size zero look is appealing. They then end up trying to lose weight by skipping meals, vomiting, and having laxatives.

If you really want to lose weight you have to have a positive outlook first.Reading magazines shouldn’t make you desperate about losing weight. I hope reading this blog gives you a better perspective on healthy eating and exercise!

Faith loses weight?

Friday, January 5th, 2007

Food has a lot to do with faith. The prayers that you are taught to offer before a meal are gratitude for the nutrition that you take so much for granted. All cultures have assimilated food ,faith and fitness in some way or the other. In the east, fitness of the mind and body is linked to yogic postures that express your communion with the universe. Does faith really make a difference? It does, according to scientists.

In the context of the millions of obese people who are trying to lose weight, faith is a true godsend. More and more faith-based books are being sold out. Some of them carry meaningful messages. The more you eat unnecessarily, the more a poor person in some other part of the world falls into the vortex of malnutrition. Thinking about others is the good thing about faith and also fosters self-control.Books like Faith and Fitness: Diet and Exercise for a Better World emphasize on simple things like hygiene, compassion and good sense while eating.

In a world where there is hardly any time to think about anyone but yourself, such books help you do a rethink. You have to eat healthy if you want to live long enough to support your family. You have to be fit so that you can value your life on a day-to-day basis. Doing yoga, praying and meditating can help your body and your mind to benefit.

What are the diet and fitness trends in store this year?

Wednesday, January 3rd, 2007

According to the American Council on Exercise (ACE), 2007 has a lot of exciting fitness trends in store:

-Less fad diets: Although fad diets are structured and promise results, more emphasis will be on plain sensible eating. Eating a lot of fiber and nuts, cutting down on the red meat, drinking a lot of water and eating small portions will be the order of fitness in 2007.

-More technology-oriented methods:The bodybugg Calorie Management System from Apex Fitness keeps track of your calorie intake. So even if you cheat on your diet plan, the bug will tell you where you went wrong.

-More holistic fitness programs:More and more people are enrolling in yoga and tai chi programs. It’s becoming more and more apparent that the mind and body work in communion with each other. You have to change both if you want results.

-Restaurant policy changes:When New York banned trans fat in its restaurants, it became apparent that obesity control has become a matter of governance. More and more restaurants will be encouraged to provide healthier food to their customers. News just in that Starbucks chucks trans fats.
