The Mental Workout

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

The best way to stay young when you are growing old is to get into the exercise routine. Another helper is the Mental Workout. How do you do it?

1. You could start using software like Mindfit.

2. Change your lifestyle. If you have the money and the health to go with it, travel around the world!

3. Pursue new interests. It could be playing sudoku or word games. It could be a new hobby like craft.

4.Watch Television. Television has had a positive effect on the lives of many old people whose kids are far away and whose lives are pretty much reduced to the boredom of retirement.

5. Socialize. The best outlet that any older person can have is while he/she makes friends.

The Snoring Male

Monday, May 14th, 2007

slp.jpg“My husband and I sleep in separate rooms. His snoring drives me crazy.”

Men snore louder than women and statistically there are more male snorers out there. Why?

-Men put on weight around the neck area and this squeezes the airway passages causing those irritating snoring sounds.

-Women have wider airways that make their chances of snoring less.

-Heredity plays a role.

Do men snore more than women? is a short snippet on the truth behind the male snore.

Snorers have more chances of suffering from hypertension, cardiovascular disease. Surgery is a good way of elongating the snorer’s life span, sex life and relationship span. Check out New hope for snorers.

Working from Home?

Thursday, May 10th, 2007

pa.jpgWhy would you rather work from home?

-If you have kids, you can watch them grow up right before your eyes and not pine and pine for them while you are at work.

-You can work in your pajamas.

-You can talk on the phone, have your tea as you like it and spend some time on cooking a wholesome meal. If you like multi-tasking this is fun.

-You don’t have to commute- a nightmare of stress for many.

-You are your own boss; so you are accountable to yourself.

Why should you never work from home?

Rethinking Thin: Review Links

Monday, May 7th, 2007

I stumbled on to this excellent Book review on a book called RETHINKING THIN :
The New Science of Weight Loss — and the Myths and Realities of Dieting.
You have to read it as the writer Gina Kolata looks at a lot of fat issues like

-The Thinness obsession:Kolata thinks that sometimes being fat is out of your control and that society is blowing body image perceptions out of proportion…I’d say shrinking it to size zero.

-The Weight Loss Industry that is making millions out of obese people’s heartaches.

-She tracks different dieters and fads and looks at fattening factors.

‘Elephant’ Syndrome

Saturday, May 5th, 2007

What goes on in the mind of a fat child? Check out this post on Angry Fat Girlz.

As parents we can teach our kids some things:

-Go easy on criticism-criticizing others(think about the names kids call their fatter or skinnier counterparts) and taking it. It isn’t easy not to take yourself seriously but once you learn to laugh at your defects life becomes easier. A lot of young kids who are anorexic or have weight problems have a problem with criticism.

Twins And You

Saturday, May 5th, 2007

How do you know if twins are on the way for you? This link might help you.

twins.jpgHaving twins/triplets,etc is always a secret desire…it’s fun to see two or three replicas of each other walking in the park or running around in the living room. But the reality is that the day your ultrasound confirms that you are going to have more than one child, your heart beat will go up and you will be terrified at the prospect of more than two eyes looking up to you for guidance.

How Do You Teach Your Kids To Cope With Anger?

Friday, May 4th, 2007

ang.jpgIn view of the Virginia tech episode, a lot of questions are coming up about mental health. I talked about doing medical check ups regularly in one post and I think focusing on your mental health is important too. Most often people tend to ignore their lows and brush aside actual symptoms of depression. Families don’t know how to deal with the depressed person in their family and classify the depressed person as ‘weird’ or ’strange’ without actually going to the root of the problem.

I think that learning to deal with anger is an important tool in dealing with mental health issues later on. Nowadays parents are overloaded with work and in their frustration they could say or do things that appear to be out of anger. We as parents can learn to deal with our anger, not by suppressing it but by accepting it and coming to terms with it;we can start to look at anger in the face and keep our calm.

Asthma Attacks

Thursday, May 3rd, 2007

This being Asthma awarenss month I thought I’d talk about this condition and the way that more and more people are suffering and losing out on the quality of life because of it.

In the United States alone, asthma prevalence among children has increased by an average of 4.3% per year. As is it is with most problems, low-income populations, minorities, and children living in inner cities have had to experience higher morbidity and mortality due to asthma.

Asthma can ruin your life if you don’t take corrective steps

-Asthma can lead to decreased physical activity.
-There are more chances of the asthmatic being on sick leave.
-The possibility of death by asthma cannot be ruled out.
-Asthmatics have even resorted to abstinence from sex and so they have a decreased quality of life.

Medical Check Ups A Must Do

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2007

Sometimes taking simple tests helps to prevent major future repercussions. A simple blood sugar test, measured after a person has fasted for at least eight hours, can indicate whether you have diabetes. Research(read Finding Whether Diabetes Lurks ) says:

“Readings above 126 milligrams of glucose per tenth of a liter of blood indicate diabetes; anything below 100 is considered normal. Intermediate levels reflect impaired glucose metabolism or pre-diabetes”.

How often do you get that medical check up? This article on men’s health Are Routine Check-Ups Really Necessary? indicates how frequently check ups are needed.

More on screenings you are better off taking here.

Something that stops me from all those doc visits is fear but it’s always better to save time by detecting problems earlier on. How many of you get those tests done?

coffee.jpgI was doing some research on coffee and I was kind of surprised that there so many cool kinds of coffee around. What started as the story of an Ethiopian goatherd observing his coffee-bean-crunching goats has now spurned off into a lucrative part of the world economy.

Check out some coffee health links….it’s not all that bad for you unless you are an insomniac!

Dietitians look at health effects of coffee

Check out the coffeescience website if you want to know how coffee affects every aspect of your health.
