Adieu

Monday, September 10th, 2007

Today I am happy-sad.

Happy because I’ve really enjoyed the time I’ve spent with 451press. I’ve learnt a great deal while posting and enjoyed every story I’ve done.

Sad because it’s time to leave.

I really hope you check the archives and read all the stuff I’ve worked on. I’ve become far more conscious of my health now than ever before. I’ve understood that most of the time we take our bodies for granted as well as the agility of our thoughts. We spend time meandering into so much trivia when we can actually be doing something that could benefit ourselves and others.

So when I say try to be healthy, I don’t mean stop being obese or skinny or lazy or careless. I don’t advocate a new diet. I have no exercise plan. My idea is that each of us has a unique potential that is the treasure trove we must seek and make use of. Otherwise we will be unhealthy and unhappy. In order to achieve these goals, we can start by making minute changes in our life like having a healthy meal with family and going for a walk everyday.

These little things multiply into a happiness that’s so vital to life-even more than money.

Thank you for reading this post and I hope I can get across to you, my readers, some day in the future from newer pastures.

Goodbye…..

Unhealthy Rock Star Fortunes

Friday, September 7th, 2007

Everyone wants to be a rock star. But how healthy is it?

Not very. All youngsters aspire to be rock stars if they get the chance but the lifestyle is far too fast and can have consequences like suicide, drug overdose, murder to bizarre accidents. The mortality rate of performers is three times that us unrock ‘n roll sorts.

According to statistics, for the 100 performers who died early, the average age was 42 for North American stars and just 35 for those in Europe.

From Elvis to Eminem the graph looks bad.

Read Dawkins

Thursday, September 6th, 2007

Have you read Richard Dawkins?

I wish my science teachers had been half as kind. I would have majored in science then. The way we’ve been taught science has just sucked out any wonder there may be left within us. My case anyway.

Even for those who pooh-pooh the evolution theory his books are worth the read.

I’ve been reading one of his books on evolution and I’m overwhelmed by the way he connects one concester to the next.

Check out his website.

Health Updates

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

For those of you who are fascinated by obesity myths this article by Gina Kolata is a good read. She deconstructs the factors responsible for obesity-it’s not just calories and exercise. It’s your DNA, the conditions you were exposed to when you were in your mother’s womb and a whole lot of other factors.

Check out America’s Biblical Health Coach Jordan Rubin’s(author of best-selling books such as The Maker’s Diet and The Great Physician’s Rx for Health and Wellness) health formulae in his three new titles-The Great Physician’s Rx for Arthritis, The Great Physician’s Rx for High Cholesterol, and The Great Physician’s Rx for Heartburn and Acid Reflux.

Thought only girls were anorexic? Catch I’m a Boy Anorexic on the BBC, slated for Sep 9.

Don’t understand my genes…..

Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

I’ve been reading books about genes.

It’s fascinating how science and technology have gone so far ahead of the layman. We use gadgets all the time and don’t understand how they work. We walk and talk and breathe with a minimal understanding of how complex our bodies can be.

In the East, we call this life and body and all processes maya. Something that is illusory as death is the only truth. In the West, we dissect life and body and processes and come to conclusions. The East-West syndrome may have disappeared but our understanding of life is minimal.

This vacation I went to my village and I had a lot of time to think and read. And I came to the conclusion that I am too caught up in ridiculous things. My understanding of anything from a gadget to an emotion is not good enough and I have decided to work on knowledge building.

Back to the genes, we have genes that determine a variety of things from tallness to how fat you can be to even how sexed up you may be. Check out the Human Genome Project if you want to know how exactly genes work in your body.

Several studies in rodents have even shown that nutrients and supplements can change the genetics of animals by switching on or off certain genes.

There is so much research going on in this field that the world will be different in a decade or so. Our approach to dealing with problems and diseases will change. The DNA mystery is the most exciting field yet and students of humanities and arts(myself included) have to stay updated on the double helix translation.

Ayurveda in your Clothes?

Monday, September 3rd, 2007

Imagine herbally healing your body with herb-treated fabrics!

It sounds kind of outlandish but it is happening today with Ayurveda or holistic healing making its way into the clothing industry.

The textiles are dyed in medicinal herb concoctions. This eco-friendly handloom fabric has many takers especially in Saudi Arabia with Ayur Burqas selling in a big way.

The initiative to create a specialised product such as Ayurvastra was borne out of the experiments conducted by the Balaramapuram-based Handloom Weavers’ Development Society in India.

Wild basil in your clothes might just be the next step to healing all day long…..
