Asthma Attacks
This being Asthma awarenss month I thought I’d talk about this condition and the way that more and more people are suffering and losing out on the quality of life because of it.
In the United States alone, asthma prevalence among children has increased by an average of 4.3% per year. As is it is with most problems, low-income populations, minorities, and children living in inner cities have had to experience higher morbidity and mortality due to asthma.
Asthma can ruin your life if you don’t take corrective steps
-Asthma can lead to decreased physical activity.
-There are more chances of the asthmatic being on sick leave.
-The possibility of death by asthma cannot be ruled out.
-Asthmatics have even resorted to abstinence from sex and so they have a decreased quality of life.
Asthma can be controlled by taking medication and staying away from environmental “triggers” like cockroaches, dust mites, furry pets, mold, tobacco smoke, and certain chemicals. Erinn has a great post on a preventive drive that’s happening right now.

I’ve had asthma since I was a wee lad, like 2 months or somesuch. I have been to the hospital about 40 times from asthma, although I have only stayed overnight about 15-20 of those times. over the past 2.5 years it had gotten much better, from October 30th, 2004 (2 night hospital stay) to about March. In March I started swimming for my high school (I had swam 2 previous summer seasons, but those are much more low key, and we dont swim much during the summer, and no pollen). It started off fine, but then when we started peaking, about 5000 yds/practice (2 hours) I had to use my enhaler sometimes. I can’t run for very long, and I think that pollen has a lot to do with that. Great post.
