Bigger is Better?

Monday, July 9th, 2007

Do you want a lunch time breast job done without going in for implants? Scientists may have just stumbled on to something. The idea is to use this new technology of using stomach fat to enlarge breasts for cancer patients who have had partial mastectomies.

This procedure called Celution may also be used in the near future by women for purely cosmetic purposes. The fat is first liposucted and then the stem cells are separated. These stem cells which are injected into the breasts then promote new fat growth. The breasts will enlarge over a period of six months.More on the science behind that here.

Dogs can Detect Cancer

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

Dogs seem to be able to sniff out cancer. I read somewhere about how a pet dog kept hovering around a mole his owner had developed. The mole turned out to be cancerous.

Dogs seem to have been trained to recognize and flag bladder cancer. With a 41% success rate, dogs can recognize a cancerous urine sample by just smelling it. This is great news as a lot of times, cancer is not detected until it’s far too late.dog.jpg

It’s believed that even diabetes can give itself away in the breath as does cancer. So the next time your dog is sniffing you could be having one of those medical check ups. And maybe your pet can save your life!

The End of the Cramps….Period.

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007

With a new drug on the anvil, one that will put an end to the monthly period Period, a new debate has sprung up about whether ending menses is a good idea.

Says Samantha(name changed on request):I’d do anything to put an end to this monthly torture.

She has all the reasons to complain- unbearable cramps, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, mood swings…every month she’s on medication for the biting pain. But when I asked her if she wanted to stop her period permanently she wasn’t so sure.

Women have been going through this ordeal for a long time. Some have no problem whatsoever;others suffer unbelievable pain. Nowadays in the work-oriented world, natural biological realities are becoming obstacles. I think the period will be a thing of the past.Look at contraceptives; they have changed the way women live and are unavoidable tools used to program life to be the way we want it to be.

However, there are a lot of health concerns. No one really knows the long term effects of doing away with the period. Read Pill That Eliminates the Period Gets Mixed Reviews for more.

The Truth Behind the Masterpiece

Thursday, April 19th, 2007

I’m short sighted and know what it’s like to wake up in the morning and fumble for my glasses. Yeah they called me four-eyes in school but I loved my glasses as it was my window to the world. Now we have glasses, lenses, surgeries…eye defects are getting cured. But long ago people dealt with their eye defects and as their vision shrunk they continued to do the things they did. Now research is linking poor vision with Impressionist painting.

pic1.jpgThe Impressionists give us a blurred picture of the world. There is a beautiful blurriness, an absence of defintion that makes the viewer get an ‘impression’ of the moment. Something like a poem. Read A New Look at Impressionists’ Failing Vision. Claude Monet had cataracts and Degas suffered from macular degeneration. That explains the vagueness of their painting. They painted what they SAW.

Interesting take on art.

Prejudiced Marketing?

Saturday, April 14th, 2007

Kind of an interesting topic for weekend reading.

Gay by design,or lifestyle choice?

Who determines taste anyway? Is the perception of what kind of car you have being based on sexual preferences sensible? Or is it a marketing gimmick? The answer looks like gimmick. Being a woman doesn’t stop you from doing ‘guy things’, so I guess these cliches are just part of the social undercurrent.

Weekend thought.

‘Doga’ For Your Pet?

Wednesday, April 11th, 2007

Right now no one has the time to keep fit and do exercise. So when you hear about people taking their pets out for a session of dog yoga, you are surprised and amused. What do pet lovers come up with these days?

Gentle stretching, dog massage and doggy props to ease those postures seem to calm the pups down. Think about you and your dog destressing in a yoga class. Instructors believe it’s partner yoga in that you spend more time with your pet and you bond. It’s also fun.

That’s what we think. Wonder about the dog:)

Hands Up!

Monday, April 2nd, 2007

Even if you’ve done botox and cosmetic surgery what could give away your age is your hands. All those blue veins protruding and telling everyone:hey she’s just done cosmetic surgery;she’s old. Look at her poor old hands.”

So it’s more than your fortune that your hands reveal. It’s your age too.

ha.jpgThe ‘hand lift’ is a new procedure that’s catching up in a big way. Either fat from another part of the body is transferred to your hands or you have fillers injected. With your hands rejuvenated you look at yourself differently.Interestingly, no one applies sun block on their hands. We don’t care for our hands enough and it shows. But surgery for young hands……….I don’t know about that.

Yoga vs Botox?

Friday, March 30th, 2007

What would you prefer doing?

Yoga or Botox?

Have you heard of the navarasas? Well it’s the Indian equivalent of the nine facial expressions-from pleasant to raging mad. Facial yoga is booming business now with yoga teachers giving you tips on how to look young by stretching your face all over the place. Stick out your tongue till your mouth hearts. Stare till your eyes look like saucers. It’s a lot of fun and you end up looking like Jim Carrey, as Katy Buchanan put it in her fun article: Yoga exercises keep mouth, cheek and brow toned

tongue.jpgThe idea is to perk up circulation and make your face more mobile. It’s always tightness that your body feels, when you’re on the phone or in a board meeting. So facial exercises help you loosen up and if you look at a mirror it makes you laugh too.

Botox paralyses your problem spots. It changes the way you look, no doubt and Hollywood will go the Botox way but ordinary people who don’t have to look like gods and goddesses on a daily basis, they can try this. And see if face contortion puts an end to crow’s feet.

What would you go for?

Exercise and your sex life

Friday, February 16th, 2007

couple.jpgIvy’s post in her blog the Between the Sheets “One more reason for the sweat” offers valuable insight on how important exercise is for a satisfying sex life. There’s a strong link between sexual dysfunction and heart disease. Most men with erectile dysfunction(ED) have more chances of having hypertension and cardiovascular disease.

Doctors believe that this could be one good reason for men to give up on being couch potatoes. Check out this great post on BottomlineFitness :”As if exercising wasn’t already important...” The connection between ED and heart disease is so strong that exercise could change your life in so many ways from making you healthier to more satisfied.

The 31 year diet

Thursday, January 25th, 2007

If the average woman spends an average of 31 years on a diet, then women must be spending an average of six months dieting every year.Read this article.

As a result women admit dreaming more about food while they are watching their weight. And more and more women scrap their dieting plans after they start them. The funny thing is that dieting hasn’t changed obesity demographics….it’s only increased it.

So much for one-stop fad diets.

The secret of the sumo wrestler’s diet

Tuesday, January 16th, 2007

Sumo wrestling takes you by surprise since being obese is the standard criterion for taking it up as a profession. Aspiring sumo wrestlers have to start as teenagers and usually have stocky bodies. Obese teenagers are not selected since they usually lack the discipline required to stay in the wrestling game.

sumobeatles.gif

Sumo wrestlers or rikishi as they are known exercise a great deal. They warm up and perform various body strengthening exercises. All this on an empty stomach. This lowers their metabolic rate and increases their appetite. By noon, the starving rikishi settle down in groups for their all important meal: the chanko-nabe. This meaty stew is an assortment of fish, pork, beef or chicken and is eaten with rice and vegetables. The steroid effect comes in because of the sheer enormous portions that the sumo wrestlers have to eat. After all that food, the rikishi has a long nap. Sumo wrestlers drink heavily since that helps them get the enormous beer belly: the balancing element in their bodies.

Back to the Stone Age

Friday, January 12th, 2007

The stone age diet is all about the way our ancestors ate food before the discovery of fire and cooking. It is believed that stone age man did not suffer from diseases like hypertension, diabetes and obesity. Life in the stone age was far from perfect. It was a life of constant risk and perhaps the most important period of man’s mental development. He survived against all odds and developed motor skills that have since turned the resourceful human into a dependent creature. Today the developed world depends tremendously on technology.

Although man was safe from certain ailments, his risks of dying from bacterial infections and wounds were far greater. No one wants go back to the stone age but there has been a lot of research in the field of paleolithic dietary norms. It was a diet high on fiber and low on unnecessary carbohydrates. Consumption of dairy products were also limited.

Due to the absence of cooking, grains, beans and root vegetables like potatoes were practically non-existent in the human diet. Research shows that grains when uncooked are highly toxic and since the purpose of grain is to really provide fruit, grains and beans contain natural poisons that make them unattractive as food.

So the absence of grains in the stone age diet makes sense as grains could not be cooked and were toxic.Today a diet high in refined grain causes sugar in the blood stream to spiral and thereby increases insulin production. The kind of meat that people eat is different too.Domesticated animals are fed on processed grain and even meat. And to make things worse modern man doesn’t exercise as much as he should.

Diet pills for dogs?

Thursday, January 11th, 2007

Now man’s best friend is getting fat too. If your dog weighs 20% more than its ideal weight, then welcome your pup to the obesity epidemic! Dogs eat fattier foods than humans. Obese canines now have a government-approved drug called Slentrol. This liquid drugs helps to cut down puppy fat and NO, it’s not for humans or cats either! The diet pill should be accompanied by a healthy diet plan and exercise.

fat_dog.jpg

But is this going a bit too far? Can you cope with dog distress symptoms. Diet pills have side effects and you don’t want a vomiting, lethargic, sickly dog,do you? Some critics believe that it’s time pet owners get responsible.

Instead of resorting to pills, owners should take their dogs for regular check-ups and ask the vet what has to be done. You’ll have to lower the dog food calories and take your dogs out for longer walks. Obesity can cause dogs to lose breath easily and make them intolerant to heat and exercise. So take practical steps to help your pets.
