Who makes the money when you lose the weight?

Tuesday, January 2nd, 2007

What would you do without the diet guru? The innovations in dieting are a multibillion dollar industry cashing in on the obesity epidemic.

After the Slim-Mint gum and the once-a-day diet pill, the Slim -Fast diet drink has made more than $610 million a year.Diet guru S. Daniel Abraham’s endeavor was to create a quick fix drink.

Dr. Arthur Agatston’s epic book, The South Beach Diet: The Delicious, Doctor-Designed, Foolproof Plan for Fast and Healthy Weight Loss, focuses on a good carb-good fat diet. The South Beach Diet has become a money spinner of sorts and has attracted people all the way from the suburbs to Hollywood.

The Atkin’s Diet has faced a lot of criticism for emphasizing too much on carb reduction and too little on cutting down on fat. But with Atkins products being mass produced, no one is complaining.

Jenny Craig of Jenny Craig Inc created a revolution of sorts when she turned prepackaged diet food into an industry. Rightly she focused on diet foods for an obese clientele hungry for less.

Jared the subway guy has turned into American Idol of the weight loss school. With a story to tell and a sixty inch jeans to show ‘em what he’s lost, Jared has become more than the face of Subway.

Jean Nidetch created The Weight Watchers, a program which involves weekly meetings where obese people can create friendships, nurture support and kick off the pounds by joint effort. The idea pillars on mutual support.

Dr. Dean Ornish focuses on a healthy diet and by cutting down on fat and unrefined carbs, he’s successfully created the Omish diet. His book Eat More,Weigh less was a bestseller.

Dr. Jay Satz of NutriSystem is a pioneer in prepackaged delicious low calorie meals. With a menu of 140 meals Satz emphasizes on variety and taste despite the low calorie count.

Barry Sears of the Enter the Zone fame, believes that diet is a drug. Eating the right portions at the right time can make you a healthier person according to the Zone diet.

Curves for Women

Friday, December 29th, 2006

What is the Curves workout all about?

The Curves exercise is a successful gym program that stresses on a total work out program for women. So there is the usual warm up,aerobic exercise, strength training and cool down. Hydraulic resistance is the key. Emphasis is on pushing and pulling rather than lifting and lowering weights. The thirty minute work out is great for women for all ages but how long can you pull it off?

Burn every extra Christmas goodie calorie

Friday, December 22nd, 2006

countdown1.jpgWith all the goodies you get to eat during Christmas you lose count of all those excess calories. The Christmas calorie calculator does the math for you…all you have to do is tick away at what you’ve had.

The Diet Detective’s Countdown is a great book for this season since you have a food-by-food analysis with calorie count and the exercise time needed to burn it. According to the author,Charles Stuart Platkin, the burn time for various foods we take for granted is quite huge:

-A half-pound of prime rib requires 230 minutes of yoga.
-A Starbucks Caramel Macchiato needs 38 minutes of biking.
-A Whopper from Burger King requires 173 minutes of walking.

Reading a book like that will really make you do a rethink on your eating habits. Instead of being discouraged and stashing it away, I think you should understand the dynamics of eating and read as much as you can about how those calories burn. Studies like this coud help people to eat sensibly, indulge on more fruits and vegetables and stay away from the prime offender- junk food. It also tells you about how much exercise you really need and you might want to be exercising more than usual.

Fitness video for your kids

Monday, December 18th, 2006

A fitness video for kids? That’s what The Three Squares has come up with. Since kids spend a lot of time watching television interactive exercise and mental stimulation sessions will help kids burn their calories. The video provides thirty minutes of sequential activity.

Parents can team up with their kids and warm up,do some basic cardio and cool down. The Brahm’s lullaby accompaniment makes the exercises a soother. The video is medically approved. Its true tht kids don’t need videos to stay active but if you think your preschooler is a little prone to fattening up and watching too much T.V, this just might be the right X’mas gift to give him.
